Poetry Talk: Yasuki Fukushima “Like drowning in moonlight”
Talk
Yasuki Fukushima JPN writer in conversation with Jeffrey Angles USA Japanologist, poet and translator
Yasuki Fukushima (born 1943 in Tokyo) is one of Japan’s most expressive poets. He brings the tanka up to date, the 1300 year-old poetic form with just 32 syllables, and has published more than 25 books of poetry based on this form. Fukushima’s social engagement and experimental performance forms derive from the avant-garde of the 60s and 70s. He performs his ‘zekkyōtanka’ (shouted tanka) to music, loud and penetrating, allows art genres to permeate each other and breaks down the boundaries between what is mine and not-mine.
Japanese-German interpreting will be available for this event.
